Next Monday. After the holidays. When work calms down. When I've got a bit more time, money or energy - take your pick.
Sound familiar? If you've ever said one of those, you're in very good company.
Life isn't waiting in the wings
Here's the thing. This is not a dress rehearsal. There's no run-through where you get to practise being anxious, stuck or unhappy before the real performance starts. This is the real performance. Right now.
I don't say that to scare anyone. I say it because it's one of the most freeing ideas I know. If this is it, it's worth making it count.
Why "next Monday" is so tempting
Putting things off isn't laziness. More often it's your mind trying to protect you. Change feels uncertain, and uncertainty feels uncomfortable. So your mind offers you a deal: stick with what you know - even if it's making you miserable - and deal with it later.
The trouble is, later has a habit of never turning up. Next Monday becomes next month. Next month becomes next year. And the thing you wanted to change quietly becomes "just the way I am".
What waiting really costs
We tend to think waiting is free. It isn't. Every week you put off dealing with the anxiety, the drinking, the habit or the relationship that's draining you, you pay for it - in sleep, in energy, in confidence, and in time you don't get back.
That's not a guilt trip. It's simply worth being honest with yourself about the price.
Start smaller than you think
You don't need a perfect plan or a perfect moment. You need a first step. A few that work:
- Name it. Say out loud, or write down, the one thing you most want to change.
- Ask "why not now?" If the honest answer is fear rather than a real obstacle, that's useful to know.
- Do one small thing today. Not Monday. Today. Make the call, book the appointment, pour the drink away.
- Get some support. Change is far easier with someone in your corner.
Happiness is an inside job. Nobody is going to turn up and make the change for you - but you don't have to do it alone either.
If there's something you've been putting off and you'd like some help, why not have a chat? It's free after all - and it will be a pleasure to help.
My very best wishes,
Steve
