Yep, 57 years later, I’ve finally got some ink on my body – the permanent kind!
As I explain in the video, this wasn’t some mid-life crisis, a box-ticking exercise, or a desperate attempt to look edgy and cool. It’s part of my ongoing commitment to emotional health and wellbeing.
The words Acceptance and Gratitude are now permanently etched into my arm as a constant reminder of two of the most valuable resources I have for living something close to my best life.
Acceptance
For me, Acceptance is all about rolling with the punches of life rather than pointlessly swinging back at things I can’t change. It’s not giving up – far from it – but choosing not to get into a draining wrestling match with reality. When something unpleasant or even traumatic happens, Acceptance helps me save my energy for what can be changed. The Serenity Prayer nails it: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
Gratitude
For me, Gratitude is an attitude – a state of mind where I consciously notice and appreciate the people, moments, and experiences in my life, whether they’re “good” or “bad” on the surface. It’s not about pretending everything’s sunshine and rainbows; it’s about seeing the blessings that already exist and spotting the lessons hidden in the tough stuff. Gratitude shifts my focus from what’s missing to what’s here, right now. It’s a daily nudge to pause, breathe, and realise… life’s pretty damn rich when you actually pay attention, even during the hard times.
So there you have it - an old man with a new Tattoo!
If I can help you better understand the value of Acceptance and Gratitude and how you might choose to integrate these into your mind (without a tattoo!) please do let me know - it will be a pleasure to help.
My very best wishes,
Steve
